The Fort of San Diego was a grand Spanish fortress during Mexico’s colonial period. This star-shaped building overlooks the bay and is within easy walking distance of the cruise ship terminal. Most visitors to Acapulco spend time at the Fort, now the Acapulco Historical Museum. The museum has several exhibits (in Spanish and English) that include historical artifacts and information about piracy and Pacific trade routes. The museum closed during the Covid-19 pandemic and has remained closed for renovations. It’s expected to reopen soon and despite the museum’s recent temporary closure, the view of the bay from the museum is an excellent reason to visit this place.
